Only Boring People Get Bored
How often do you feel bored? This week at Harper Morgan English, we’re talking about boredom.
This [1] great article from the Guardian explores the reasons we feel bored so often. Sandi Mann talks about the fact that we have everything at our fingertips yet we often feel like we have nothing to do. She goes on the explain that the reason so many of us are at a loss is because we constantly feel like we need to increase the level of our entertainment. In essence she argues that the reason we are so bored is because we have so many different ways to entertain ourselves.
Here are some questions for you to think about;
How much time do you spend using your phone everyday? Do you ever feel frustrated at social media because there is nothing new or interesting to read?
What do you do when you’re bored? Do you ever feel bored when you’re with your friends and family?
What about when you’re doing something ‘entertaining’? Are you the sort of person who scrolls through their phone while watching a film or TV show? Do you do this because you’re not enjoying it or because you’re bored? If you do this, do you ever feel overstimulated?
There is an old saying (usually directed at children) ‘only boring people get bored’; do you think this is true? Is the problem that we simply don’t know how to entertain ourselves correctly?
As always, we’re very interested in hearing what you think. Comment and share and join the conversation!
